Ο βασικότερος παράγοντας στην ιστιοπλοία είναι ο άνεμος διότι, με τη βοήθεια των πανιών, μετατρέπεται η ενέργεια του σε κινητήρια δύναμη. Ανάλογα με τη διεύθυνση του ανέμου μπορούμε, δίνοντας στα πανιά μας την κατάλληλη θέση, να ακολουθούμε κάποιες πλεύσεις.
Η διεύθυνση του ανέμου είναι εκείνη από την οποία αυτός έρχεται και όχι εκείνη προς την οποία κατευθύνεται.
